Food Allergy Diagnosis & Management
Food allergy is an immune sensitivity triggering various symptoms in children and adults. Most allergic reactions to food are not life threatening, but severe reactions do occur. Symptoms of food allergy include chronic skin rash, anaphylaxis, and gastrointestinal distress such as diarrhea and constipation. Early diagnosis is critical in identifying, preventing and managing the allergy.
A chronic skin irritation known as eczema (atopic dermatitis) is the most common manifestation of food allergy. Eczema causes raised, scaly and itchy rashes on the body, face and scalp. The condition can affect children as young as three months of age. Food allergy triggered dermatitis often parallels the natural course of the child’s immune sensitivity and resolves by age five to seven. Unfortunately, the condition is often just treated topically with emollients and creams without ever determining the offending proteins in the child’s diet or mother’s diet in the case of breastfeeding infants.
Peanut allergy is a common concern for families of school-age children. These allergic reactions can occur very quickly after ingestion with severe symptoms that can be life threatening. However, not all children react the same way to the same peanut allergy. We now have the ability to break down peanut allergy into its representative component groups. These five known component proteins have been studied extensively, helping us identify children that are at high risk for severe reactions such as anaphylaxis. Yampa Valley Medical Center Ears, Nose and Throat Clinic was the first to offer this testing to patients.
